Photo - Tube Station Headwall
Tube Station Headwall of the 1905-7 era
of station construction showing the circular tunnel shape and the various communication
systems located on the end wall of the station. There is a rail gap indicator over
the tunnel mouth on the right and a 7-car stopping mark on the track just inside the
tunnel. Many of the original LER tunnel stations could only accommodate 7-car trains
if the end cabs were stopped in the tunnels. This allowed all the passenger doors to
access the platform. Modern train have six cars and have to stop with the driver's
cab in the platform to allow One Person Operation.
The green board with the black arrows on the left is the new stopping mark for
6-car OPO trains.
